Questions on South Korea

    1. The republic of Korea (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_official_name_of_South_Korea )
    1. Lee Myung-bak is the President of South Korea. Lee Myung-bak has been working for a 5-year term that is not renewable.  He started his five year term on February 25, 2008. Born December 19, 1941. He was the CEO of Hyundai Engineering and Construction and the mayor of Seol. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_South_Korea )
    1. On August 8, 1945, during the final days of World War II, the Soviet Union declared war against Japan and launched an invasion of Korea. The U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They decided to establish a trusteeship for a five-year period, during which a Korean provisional government would prepare for full independence; they also agreed to form a joint United States-Soviet commission to assist in organizing a single "provisional Korean democratic government." The Soviet insistence that only those "democratic" parties and social organizations upholding the trusteeship plan be allowed to participate in the formation of an all-Korean government was unacceptable to the United States. The United States argued that the Soviet formula, if accepted, would put the communists in controlling positions throughout Korea.
    1.
    1. North Korea and the East China Sea border South Korea.
    1. At the end of World War II, the governments of the United States and the Soviet Union decided that the Soviet Union would invade the Japanese held territories of mainland Asia south to the 38th Parallel and the United States would invade north to the same point. In 1948,with a failure to unite the two areas, elections were held and the new South Korea came under the power of  Syngman Rhee. Kim Il-sung took power in North Korea.
    On June 25 June, 1950, communist North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel into democratic South Korea.
    The 38th parallel, as the pre-war boundary between the countries, became the focal point for negotiations of a cease fire. There has been no peace treaty, only a cease fire. The 38th parallel continues to be the most highly defended border in the world across the 3 mile wide Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
    1. North and South Korea relations are the political, diplomatic, and military interactions between North Korea and South Korea from the division of Korea today. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea_%E2%80%93_South_Korea_relations)
    1. South Korea officially the Republic of Korea and sometimes referred to simple as Korea, is a country in East Asia, located on the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula. It is neighbored by the People's Republic of China to the west, Japan t the east, and North Korea to the north. Its capital is Seoul, which is also its largest city. South Korea lies in temperate climate region with a predominantly mountainous terrain. Its territory covers a total area of 99,392 square kilometers and has a population of 50 million.  They have wonderful schools, cool neat houses, and a great government/ They are just like America except that speak a different language. People work day and night. At night tht have beautiful lights and starry skys. They have cool clothes, action figures, and cool breezy days. Their lunch is free an dwe have cool shoes that you have to wear inside the school. It is a busy city, you have mini marts everywhere. Even at the age of 6 you can go shopping by yourself, but you can't be below age 6.
    1. The United Nations likes the fact that we hate Northern Korea, because so do they. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. This quote applies here. Although the Soviets are our enemy, they also look at North Korea as an enemy, so we become their  friend through this.
    1. Seoul is the major city of South Korea.

Today in class...

We watched the beginning of a video about North Korea. 2 American reporters got to go into NK, supposedly to document a trip of an eye doctor healing several blind people, but really they just wanted ti get the inside scoop on what living in NK was really like.

1/5/11

Today in class...
we had a class discussion.

The Soviet Union (Russia,USSR) took the north and the USA took the south.
Japans army is disassembled at the end of WWII, and the Soviet Union and US, each get a part of Korea.
Decided to separate Korea. Russia got the north, we got the south.

1950's -> Russia and USA both developing nuclear weapons.
Proxy- the consider the Korean war a proxy war. [they used someone to win the war for them] (It was like the US was fighting Russia, but it was largely fought with US weapons, rather than Soviet weapons. We never declared war on them, and they never declared war on us, but we were both fighting for parts of Korea, which gave Korea a foot up on the Soviets.)
The war technically has never actually come to an end. There has been no truce or surrender in the Korean, but there was a cease fire, which meant they could cool off a bit, but they still don't like each other. It is very tense between both of them still.

North Korea -> hates USA
South Korea -> likes USA
We help set up South Korea, because SK is a sturdy government, and it is still developing and coming along, whereas NK has people starving and dying, and they have a dictator in charge. SK has a president.

January 3rd (it's a day late)

Today in class...
We broke off into two sections into the class, and in those two sections, we broke off into 2 or 3 groups. So in the class we had a total of about 4 or 5 groups.
Depending on whether you were on the left or the right side of the classroom, that determined whether you were North Korea or South Korea. I was South Korea. Mr. Schick gave us a list of about 10 questions to answer within each of our groups, (My group consists of Madi, Clarke, and I) and we have to finish it, and it's due on Wednesday.

December 9th, In class. (sorry for the lateness of this post)

In class we finished watch Slumdog Millionaire, and Jamal finished the game show, and walked away with 20 million rupees.  Him and Latika were re-united, and Salim (Jamal's brother) was killed.  He was shot by the host, while sitting in a bathtub full of money.
